What a bespoke tailor in Chennai should make, and what we make

Bespoke two-piece and three-piece suits, double-breasted suits, tuxedos and dinner suits, morning coats, blazers and sports jackets; trousers; shirts in Thomas Mason, Alumo, Söktaş and D&J Anderson cottons; overcoats and travel coats; womenswear; and the Indian formal wardrobe, sherwani, achkan, bandhgala, Nehru jacket, bandi, kurta, churidar and Jodhpuri suit. Every garment is listed in the catalogue with its lead time, fittings and price tier.

How bespoke works here: pattern, basted fitting, final fitting

A consultation of about an hour, where the cloth is chosen in the hand against the occasion, the hour and the venue. A pattern drafted from your measurements with no stock block underneath. A basted fitting in your own cloth at week two or three, where the balance, shoulder and chest are corrected on the garment. A final fitting before finishing, and a third fitting where the fit demands it. The pattern then stays on file. A two-piece suit takes four to six weeks; a sherwani five to six, or eight to twelve with heavy embroidery.

Cloth for Chennai: tropical weaves from Zegna, Holland & Sherry, Scabal, Dormeuil and VBC

Chennai is warm most of the year and a bespoke tailor here has to cut for it. We keep the tropical and high-twist collections, Holland & Sherry Fresco, Vitale Barberis Canonico Tropical, Zegna Cool Effect, Scabal tropical weaves, Dormeuil and Roger La Viale lightweights, alongside year-round worsteds and flannels for travel. Raymond covers the entry tier. The bunch books are opened with you in Adyar.

What a bespoke suit costs in Chennai: three tiers

We do not publish a price list; the cloth decides most of the number. Entry tier: an Indian mill wool such as Raymond, half-canvassed, in a plain cut. Mid tier: an imported British or Italian worsted. Top tier: Super 130s to 150s and above from Zegna or Scabal, full canvas, hand-padded lapels and hand-worked buttonholes. Construction and complexity move the number within a tier. The pricing page has the detail; we quote your exact figure at the consultation.

From Adyar to every neighbourhood, and beyond

We have one atelier, in Adyar, and we serve the whole city from it. Each Chennai neighbourhood has its own page with directions and drive times: Besant Nagar, Mylapore, T Nagar, Anna Nagar, Nungambakkam, Velachery, OMR, Sholinganallur, Guindy, Tambaram, Chromepet, Porur, Kilpauk, Egmore, and the full list. Clients from Coimbatore, Bangalore, Hyderabad, Kochi and across India plan two visits, one to measure and one to fit, and we schedule the fittings around their trips. Do you serve areas of Chennai other than Adyar?
Yes, all of them: All of Chennai and its suburbs, every city in Tamil Nadu, South India, the rest of India, and NRI clients visiting Chennai. Clients travel to Adyar from Coimbatore and Bangalore and we plan fittings around their trips.
How much does a bespoke suit cost in Chennai at The Black Lapel?
Three tiers decided by cloth: Indian mill wool (entry), imported British or Italian worsted (mid), Super 130s to 150s from Zegna or Scabal with full canvas (top). We quote the exact figure at the consultation or on WhatsApp.
How long does a bespoke suit take?
Four to six weeks for a two-piece, with two fittings; a three-piece adds a week; a jacket alone three to four weeks.
Can you make a tuxedo or a groom suit?
Yes. Tuxedos and dinner suits in barathea or fine evening wool with grosgrain or satin facings; groom suits in ivory, cream, navy or midnight cut for the ceremony and the reception. Start eight to ten weeks before the date.
Do I need an appointment?
We work by appointment so the right bunch books and a cutter are ready for you. Walk-ins are welcome when we are not with another client.
