Bespoke Shirts

The Spread Collar Shirt.

The contemporary business collar — open, confident, and compatible with almost every professional context.

The spread collar is now the dominant collar of professional dress across most of the world, having displaced the point collar that defined business shirts for most of the twentieth century. Its appeal is logical: the wider opening between the collar points accommodates the fuller knots of the modern tie and looks equally correct open-collar when no tie is worn. A bespoke spread collar shirt from The Black Lapel is made with a collar that opens to the correct spread for your face and neck proportion — not the standard spread of a mass-produced shirt, but the spread that works for your specific build.

The anatomy of the spread collar — what varies and why it matters

A spread collar has three adjustable elements: the spread angle (the angle between the collar points), the collar band height (the height of the stand that lifts the collar away from the neck), and the collar point length (how long the points are). All three affect the appearance of the finished collar on the body.

The spread angle is the most important choice. A moderate spread — collar points separated by roughly 4–5 inches — is the most versatile, accommodating half-Windsor and Pratt knots comfortably and sitting correctly open-collar. A wider spread — 5–7 inches — creates a more open, bold look that works well with a full Windsor knot and reads as more contemporary and assertive. An extreme spread approaches the territory of the cutaway collar. At The Black Lapel, we show you collar examples at the consultation and identify the spread that works for your neck width, the knot you prefer, and the formality you need.

The collar band height determines how much of the collar is visible above the jacket lapel. A taller band — 3.5 to 4 cm — creates a more formal, precise look. A lower band sits closer to the neck and reads as slightly more casual. Neither is incorrect; the choice is one of personal preference and the formality of the context.

With a tie, and without — why spread collar works in both

The spread collar works with ties because its opening is wide enough to frame a proper knot cleanly. A half-Windsor or Pratt knot — the two knots most appropriate for most professional contexts — sits centrally in the spread opening and is fully visible. A full Windsor knot, with its triangular symmetry, works particularly well with a wider spread collar where it fills the opening without feeling cramped.

Open-collar, the spread collar works because the points lie flat and do not roll or curl the way a point collar tends to when worn without a tie. Open-collar with a spread collar is one of the most effortlessly correct looks in smart-casual dressing: the collar lies cleanly on the lapels of a jacket, the shirt front is neat, and the overall impression is one of considered casualness rather than just casualness.

Cloth choices for the spread collar shirt

Any shirting cloth works with a spread collar, but the most natural pairing is a firm, smooth poplin or twill — fabrics that hold the collar's shape well and give a crisp, clean look. A Thomas Mason 100/2 two-ply poplin provides the ideal hand: smooth enough to iron to a flat line, firm enough to hold that line through the day.

For warmer conditions — and Chennai's professional context is often warm — a two-ply poplin in the 80–90 gsm range provides the right balance of crispness and breathability. Heavier cloths, while excellent in air-conditioned environments, can feel oppressive in outdoor settings or during the commute.

Colour: white and pale blue are the most natural choices for a spread collar shirt intended for professional use. The spread collar reads as confident without being aggressive, and is most effective in the cleaner, more contained colours where the collar itself provides the statement rather than the pattern of the cloth.
