What a gift voucher covers
Gift vouchers at The Black Lapel are issued in fixed denominations and can be applied to any commission — a bespoke suit, a set of shirts, a sherwani, an alteration, or any combination of garments up to the value of the voucher. There are no restrictions on what the voucher can be used for within our range of work.
The recipient visits the atelier for a consultation, selects their cloth and garment, and applies the voucher to the resulting commission. If the commission value exceeds the voucher, the recipient pays the balance. If the commission is less than the voucher value, the balance is retained for a future commission — gift vouchers do not expire and are not redeemed for cash.
Vouchers are available in denominations that correspond to our typical garment price points: a voucher appropriate for a pair of bespoke trousers or a set of two shirts; a voucher appropriate for a bespoke jacket; a voucher appropriate for a full bespoke suit. We discuss specific denominations at the time of purchase and advise on what is most appropriate for the intended recipient and occasion.
When a gift voucher is the right gift
Weddings and engagements. A gift voucher for a wedding commission — the groom's suit, the sherwani, the groomsmen's outfits — is a practical and appreciated gift. It allows the groom to commission what he actually needs for the occasion, made correctly for his specific measurements and style.
Milestone professional occasions. A promotion, a partnership announcement, a board appointment — occasions that demand a garment equal to the new status. A gift voucher allows the recipient to commission that garment with the full attention of the process, rather than receiving a garment chosen on their behalf that may not be right.
Significant birthdays. For the person who is difficult to buy for — who has the things they need and whose preferences are specific — a gift voucher for bespoke tailoring is a gift of craft and attention that is genuinely unusual. It is not another object; it is a made experience.
Fathers, fathers-in-law, brothers. The men in your life who would not commission bespoke tailoring for themselves, either from modesty or from the belief that the occasion for it has not yet arrived. A gift voucher creates the occasion and removes the barrier of the initial decision. Many of our long-term clients began with a gift voucher from someone who knew them well enough to know what they needed.
How to purchase a gift voucher
Gift vouchers are purchased in person at the atelier, by phone, or by email. We do not sell gift vouchers through a web store — partly because we want to discuss the appropriate denomination for the specific occasion, and partly because the voucher itself is a physical object: a card in a folded envelope, printed with the voucher details and value, suitable for giving in person or posting.
To purchase, call us on +91 98414 31402, WhatsApp the same number, or email hello@theblacklapel.com with the denomination you have in mind and the occasion. We will confirm the details, arrange payment, and dispatch or hold the voucher for collection as preferred. We are happy to write a note to accompany the voucher if you are unable to present it in person.
For the recipient — what to expect
If you have received a gift voucher from The Black Lapel, you have been given something genuine: a commission at a workshop where the work is done correctly and where the people who do it have been doing it for decades. The next step is a visit to the atelier at your convenience.
You do not need to know what you want before you come. The consultation will help you work out what is most appropriate for your life, your wardrobe, and the value of the voucher. Come without expectations and leave with a commission that is entirely yours — cloth chosen by you, made for you, finished by the hands of people who know how to do this well.
Gift vouchers are transferable — if you have received a voucher but would prefer to give it to someone else, you may do so. Contact us and we will reissue the voucher in the new recipient's name.
